First off: found this super cool container yesterday while out running errands. And only $5.99! The Stay-Fit Lunch 2 Go container has an icepack in the lid, 3 compartments & a tray on top for small snacks or cutlery. It is much smaller than our Goodbyn boxes. (This actually fits in M's lunchbox.) I also like the larger compartment for a sandwich. (The Goodbyn boxes are hard to fit a full size sandwich. For example for this lunch I would have had to split the sandwiches up between the top compartment & the lower square.) The box does not have a space for a water container however.

Second: Halloween is finally here! The last of our fun Halloween lunches until next year. We still have some snow left on the ground from the freak snowstorm over the weekend, so it's hard to feel like we are still in October. Trick-or-treating is going to be super quick tonight!

M's Lunch Today:
* jam/soynut butter mummy sandwiches
(provolone cheese, nori & icing eyes for decoration)
* red & green grape kabobs
* cat pasta salad
* strawberry slices

I wanted to make a Frankenwich sandwich for M's lunch today. It looked a lot better in my head than in reality. This is why I love cookie cutters - left to my own devices I'm not so great at getting my "creation" to resemble what I actually want.

M's Lunch Today:
* cream cheese & bagel chips
* bat shaped cantaloupe
* turkey/cheese/mustard Frankenwich
(cheese decorations & grape eyes)
* grapes with a pumpkin pick

I pre-made T some hot dog mummies while making M's lunch, so putting together his lunch this afternoon was a cinch. I always love it when that works out!

T's Lunch Today:
* nitrate-free chicken hotdogs
(wrapped in croissant dough & icing eyes)
* ketchup for dipping
* cat mac & cheese
* pumpkin cookies
* strawberries with a pumpkin pick
My idea for yesterday's lunch came to fruition today. I didn't have any croissant dough yesterday (and just did not have the time or will to make from fresh). J stopped at the grocery last night and picked up some for me so that I could make some mummies!

M's Lunch Today:
* nitrate-free chicken hot dog "mummies"
(wrapped in croissant dough & icing eyes)
(container hold mustard for dipping)
* pumpkin cookies
* cat pasta salad with tomatoes
* strawberries with pumpkin pick

If T could, he would eat candy for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Thankfully our house is candy free so he can't make that a reality. But it doesn't stop him for asking for it every time we go to the grocery. So for today's we have candy corn - just a bit healthier!

(You may have noticed that my kids lunches this week have been sporting something pretty unusual for us - cookies! They are Trader Joe's Halloween Cookies and even though they are all natural they are in no way super healthy. Just two of those bad boys is 130 calories! But it's Halloween week, and so we'll have a little treat this week and then what ever is left over J will be taking to work with him. You've gotta live a little right?)

T's Lunch Today:
* candy corn sandwich
(food coloring markers, cheese & cream cheese)
* mini skull sandwiches
* grape kabobs
* pumpkin gummies
* cheese & turkey pepperoni
(I had planned on these being on crackers, but realized we were all out.)
* pumpkin cookies

Last night I was sitting at the kitchen table after dinner thinking about what to do for lunches today. Requirements were that it had to have a Halloween theme and involve noodles as that is what M asked for. I came up with the perfect idea and then realized that I didn't have all the ingredients needed. So, I'll just hold off on that idea until I can get to the grocery later today. J came up with idea of making a witch. And I just ran with it from there. Hope it makes M smile as much as it made me.

M's Lunch Today:
* quesadilla witch with dyed ramen noodles "hair"
(face is colored with food markers)
cheese for the face and moon & raisin wart
* pumpkin gummies
* cheese stick "fingers"
("nails" colored with food marker)
* "eyeballs" (banana slices & grapes)
* raisins with a skeleton cheese face

Pulled out the Hello Kitty cutters I got a few weeks ago. They did not turn out nearly as good as they looked in my head, but for a first attempt I'm not too disappointed. At least M could tell what they were this time!

M's Lunch Today:
* Hello Kitty quesadillas
(cheddar cheese & turkey pepperoni bow,
fruit leather eyes & nose, nori whiskers)
* grapes
* bagel chips & cream cheese
* tomatoes

Two rocks, one stone.
One, today is Spirt Day. For More info go here.
"Millions of Americans wear purple on Spirit Day as a sign of support for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) youth and to speak out against bullying. Spirit Day was started in 2010 by teenager Brittany McMillan as a response to the young people who had taken their own lives. Observed annually on October 20, individuals, schools, organizations, corporations, media professionals and celebrities wear purple, which symbolizes spirit on the rainbow flag. Getting involved is easy -- participants are asked to simply "go purple" on October 20 as we work to create a world in which LGBT teens are celebrated and accepted for who they are."

Two, M has been asking for a Justin Bieber bento theme. Making people is way above my pay grade, so I've been putting it off. But today inspiration hit and I decided that today I could combine purple (Justin's favorite color, so I'm told), music notes and some simple letters to fulfill the request.

Purple for Spirit Day and Justin Bieber. Win win.

M's Lunch Today:
* grape jam & soy nut butter letter/music note/heart sandwiches
* grapes
* rasins
* provolone cheese hearts & turkey pepperonis

* turkey & cheese on sandwich rounds halved
(grape eye, cheese decorations)
* vegetable gummies
* raisins
* grapes & blueberries

T asked for a bagel with cream cheese for lunch today. Short of making the bagel into a face I haven't come up with any other fun ideas. So, today I just cut the bagel into triangles, plopped into bear baking cups and then ran with the bear theme.

T's Lunch Today:
*bagel with cream cheese
* 1 clementine
* vegetable bear gummies
* colby cheese bear with icing eyes & fruit leather nose/mouth/heart
* grapes with bear pick

Last week was, quite simply, madness. I am a co-chair for M's school Fall Festival - which was held this past Saturday - and so this past week was lots of sleepless nights, running around picking up a million things, 5 hour long meetings, conference calls and (horribly) 2 McDonald's lunches for T. So needless to say, Bento Lunches were at the bottom of the "to do" list last week. But, the big event is over (Thank God) and I'm ready to start up Bento-ing again. (M is ready too, she was none too please that she got just "a regular sandwich and some fruit" all last week.)

M's lunch today:

flower garden:
colby, swiss and provolone cheese flowers
with snap pea crisps for stems

* grape jam & soy nut butter flower sandwich
(my paining made it look more like the British flag than a flower, non?)
* grape kabobs on flower pics
* tomatoes on leaf picks
* and some vegetable gummies in the compartment next to the water bottle

In fourteen hundred ninety-two
Columbus sailed the ocean blue.
He had three ships and left from Spain;
He sailed through sunshine, wind and rain.

This morning M/T and I we were talking all about Christopher Columbus - were he set sail from, where he landed, and what it means to be an explorer. I thought it would fun to have today's lunch extend that talk.

The Americas (and Bahamas)
M has a quesadilla on corn tortilla
The Nina, The Pinta & The Santa Maria
apple slices with bamboo kabob skewers & paper sails
Trader Joe's vegetable gummy bears

T had a cream cheese & strawberry jam sandwich

A shared muffin tin of clementines, gluten free pretzels & grapes
