If T could, he would eat candy for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Thankfully our house is candy free so he can't make that a reality. But it doesn't stop him for asking for it every time we go to the grocery. So for today's we have candy corn - just a bit healthier!

(You may have noticed that my kids lunches this week have been sporting something pretty unusual for us - cookies! They are Trader Joe's Halloween Cookies and even though they are all natural they are in no way super healthy. Just two of those bad boys is 130 calories! But it's Halloween week, and so we'll have a little treat this week and then what ever is left over J will be taking to work with him. You've gotta live a little right?)
T's Lunch Today:
* candy corn sandwich
(food coloring markers, cheese & cream cheese)
* mini skull sandwiches
* grape kabobs
* pumpkin gummies
* cheese & turkey pepperoni
(I had planned on these being on crackers, but realized we were all out.)
* pumpkin cookies

T asked for a bagel with cream cheese for lunch today. Short of making the bagel into a face I haven't come up with any other fun ideas. So, today I just cut the bagel into triangles, plopped into bear baking cups and then ran with the bear theme.

T's Lunch Today:
*bagel with cream cheese
* 1 clementine
* vegetable bear gummies
* colby cheese bear with icing eyes & fruit leather nose/mouth/heart
* grapes with bear pick

In fourteen hundred ninety-two
Columbus sailed the ocean blue.
He had three ships and left from Spain;
He sailed through sunshine, wind and rain.
This morning M/T and I we were talking all about Christopher Columbus - were he set sail from, where he landed, and what it means to be an explorer. I thought it would fun to have today's lunch extend that talk.
The Americas (and Bahamas)
M has a quesadilla on corn tortilla
The Nina, The Pinta & The Santa Maria
apple slices with bamboo kabob skewers & paper sails
Trader Joe's vegetable gummy bears
T had a cream cheese & strawberry jam sandwich

Yesterday while at Home Goods I found this super cute black cat pasta. It's all natural wheat & spinach pasta cat shapes. Here is their website- they have lots of different fun shapes. I decided to make T's bento lunch using the black cat as inspiration. Here's what he ate today:
and sprinkled with parmesan cheese
for the eyes & teeth, nori for the center of the eye & whiskers
sliced kiwi & watermelon shaped moons and "boo"
purple & green grape kabobs
after punching out my main shapes I always have a
lots of little stars and only a few scrapes left over

cheddar cheese quesadilla cats, pasta, watermelon
& kiwi, pretzels & cheese dip, and grapes
provolone cheese eyes & teeth, blueberries for the
center of the eye and nori for the whiskers
black cat pasta sauteed with a bit of olive oil
cheddar cheese quesadilla with provolone cheese
what was left over -
the cheese teeth and some of the tiny quesadilla stars
bit left over,so I use a tiny cutter to make cute shapes
so I'll have as little waste as possible
I can't believe that my child, the pickiest eater alive, actually ate nori! HE ATE SEAWEED! He tried one of the whiskers and declared "Oh wow, I love those yummy whiskers!" Pat on the back for me.

In my research into bento's I came across this one amazing blog with a different take on the whole bento thing - muffin tins! Muffin Tin Mom's website is gorgeous and full of super cute ideas to turn an everyday muffin tin into a great bento lunch. Since T is home for lunch and I don't need to pack him a lunch I thought this would be a fun way for him to have his bento. When I sat the finished lunch in front of him he was so excited and told me "you are the best mom any boy could ever have." High five T, flattery will get you everywhere.
strawberry jam ghost & bat sandwiches with blueberry eyes, star shaped cantaloupe, 1 clementine, pumpkin shaped colby cheese and half of a Clif Kids Z bar (full moon brownie)
Here is what was left over:
T really does not like eating cheese, so getting him to eat 2 of the pumpkins is considered a huge success.
He really liked the cantaloupe (something I couldn't even get him to try before).
He called it star fruit and was a happy little guy to gobble it all up!
