T asked for a bagel with cream cheese for lunch today. Short of making the bagel into a face I haven't come up with any other fun ideas. So, today I just cut the bagel into triangles, plopped into bear baking cups and then ran with the bear theme.

T's Lunch Today:
*bagel with cream cheese
* 1 clementine
* vegetable bear gummies
* colby cheese bear with icing eyes & fruit leather nose/mouth/heart
* grapes with bear pick

I had a bit of the cat pasta left over that needed to be used up, so M had a dog & cat lunch today:

turkey & mustard on whole wheat sandwich round
provolone cheese dog, cheddar nose & ear
icing eye and fruit leather dots

cat pasts sprinkled with a bit of parmesan cheese

watermelon flowers

gluten free pretzels & cheese dip

No bento/muffin-tin lunch for T today. I was in meetings all morning and by the time we got home we were running majorly behind our school schedule, so he ended up with exactly what he asked for - a  bowl of cereal & some strawberries.

Darling it's better
Down where it's wetter
Take it from me
Up on the shore they work all day
Out in the sun they slave away
While we devotin'
Full time to floatin'
Under the sea

Today's lunches took on an underwater theme. I've been wanting to make these octopus hot dogs ever since I saw them on the Biting The Hand That Feeds You blog, but wanted to wait until M's Goodbyn boxes came.

M's lunch today

ramen noodles dyed blue
with some colby cheese fish swimming around

apple "star fish"

octopus nitrate-free chicken hot dogs
and ketchup for dipping

carrot "star fish"

And a few little goldfish crackers in the compartment next to her drink bottle. There isn't really any room to put in an ice pack to keep everything cool (unless I want to give up one of the food compartments, so I filled her drink bottle up with ice cubes that should be melted in time for lunch. Hopefully that works.

 T's lunch today:

 ramen noodles dyed blue
& provolone cheese fish swimming around

 strawberry jam fish sandwich
cheddar cheese for the stripes & an icing eye

 green grape "fish eggs"
& a provolone fish

 cantaloupe "star fish"

half of a nitrate-free chicken hot dog "octopus"

gold fish crackers

what was left over:
cheese fish & 2 stripes
& about half of the ramen noodles

Bento Lunch
Tuesday, October 4, 2011
Yesterday while at Home Goods I found this super cute black cat pasta. It's all natural wheat & spinach pasta cat shapes. Here is their website- they have lots of different fun shapes. I decided to make T's bento lunch using the black cat as inspiration. Here's what he ate today:

cheddar cheese quesadilla cats, pasta, watermelon
& kiwi, pretzels & cheese dip, and grapes

provolone cheese eyes & teeth, blueberries for the
center of the eye and nori for the whiskers

black cat pasta sauteed with a bit of olive oil
and sprinkled with parmesan cheese

cheddar cheese quesadilla with provolone cheese
for the eyes & teeth, nori for the center of the eye & whiskers

sliced kiwi & watermelon shaped moons and "boo"

purple & green grape kabobs

what was left over -
the cheese teeth and some of the tiny quesadilla stars

after punching out my main shapes I always have a
bit left over,so I use a tiny cutter to make cute shapes
so I'll have as little waste as possible

lots of little stars and only a few scrapes left over

I can't believe that my child, the pickiest eater alive, actually ate nori! HE ATE SEAWEED! He tried one of the whiskers and declared "Oh wow, I love those yummy whiskers!" Pat on the back for me.

Bento of the Week
I remembered to take a picture this time! As you can see I used my new bento supplies. I love them. They just make it all so cute. And of course have to mention those silicone baking cups. Here's M's lunch for today:

strawberry & soy nut butter sandwiches, raisins, Trader Joe's peppercorn rice crisps, flower carrots with ranch dressing in container, and blueberries & watermelon shaped M's

watermelon M's and blueberries with a frog pick

flower carrots with ranch dressing (in container) and a bunny pick

These little cutters are going to take some getting used to. There are 2 separate pieces - one cutter for the shape and one to add the details. On my first try I cut the shape out and then tried to add the details. Made for one very squished looking bear, plus all the filling seeped out. I had already added the soy nut butter and jam to the bread for all the animals, so I had to make a slight adjustment for the rest of the characters to add the details, so they aren't as defined as they should be. In future I know that I need to add the details first, then cut out the shape, then add fillings. Trial and error.
